RECORD REVIEW: Say Like The French Say – This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

“This is why we can’t have nice things!” So many times I had heard this screamed at me or in my general direction. When I was introduced to this album, I wept. “Finally! Finally someone understands me! I fucking love Legos!”

‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’ is Say Like The French Say’s debut album. Members include Adam Gears, James Nelson, Zac Poxleitner & David Nicoletti, and they are from Minneapolis.

I unzipped the compressed folder, wiping away tears of relief and joy. “Say like the French say… I know in the past I’ve found myself wondering what the French are saying, and I never know. I fucking love Phoenix though, perhaps this album will help me better connect? I see the third track is called ‘c’est la vie’. I know that’s French. I believe it’s like a salutation? Or a dish? Oh SHIT! YES! Track four is called ‘f that’! I know that’s gotta be the best song on here. Track 10 is called ‘headlights in rome’? Yeah… they’re on the wrong side of the road! Ok. FOCUS.”

As I started listening to the album I noticed several things right off the bat. Maybe a little Manchester Orchestra? Some Death Cab For Cutie perhaps? Yes I got those off their Facebook page, but go do some comparing on your own, I fucking dare you. For a debut album, I’d say they are getting an alright start. I liked the first track, ‘…and the cars go by’. Don’t get me wrong though, ‘f that’ did not disappoint, ‘fucking’ was the 6th word in. I do have to say that my favorite song off the album was ‘buy high, sell low’ though, which is surprising, because that is the exact opposite of what you are supposed to do. “These guys are obviously not too well versed in investment tactics.” I thought to myself. “Well, that’s OK. I mean you can’t be awesome at EVERYTHING.”

Learn more at http://www.saylikethefrenchsay.com/, where you can also grab a copy of the album. If you happen to live in Minneapolis, their official CD release show is Sat, Aug 14th @ Sauce w/ Self-Evident (check this review of their latest album, endings), Kill-Me Kare Bare & With a Gun for a Face. I’m going. I’ve never been to a CD release show before, but I was told there would be PBR and anyone who would name their band ‘With a Gun for a Face’ has GOT to be cool.
